Hyderabad: In a new initiative, the Telangana government will now train and employ transgender individuals in the traffic control department. Transgenders will be hired as volunteers to control traffic within the city limits. They will be trained and paid a stipend for their work, said Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy. This will be India’s first-ever transgender-specific government recruitment cum social welfare program
CM Revanth Reddy on Friday held a review meeting on the development of Hyderabad, roads in GHMC limits and maintenance of pavements in the city and suggested the officials to explore the possibility of using transgenders to regulate traffic in the city.
The officials were also advised to have a special uniform for the transgenders on duty.
The representation designs for uniforms for He/She and Him/Her transgender individuals are expected to be finalised soon along with terms of employment.
CM Reddy said that some stipend should be given to them every month, and this would provide some employment to them. The Chief Minister directed the officials to collect the details of the transgenders who are interested in it. He said that special training should also be given to them for a week and ten days.
Along with the traffic police department, home guards are currently performing these duties in the city. The Chief Minister suggested that these duties should be assigned to the transgenders on the same lines as the Home Guards.
