hyderabad metro phase 2 to begin soon, but fourth connectivity city corridor has to stop; know why?

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Metro Phase 2 is ready to begin construction, with a little change of plans. It will initially cover 76.4 kilometres along five corridors. Earlier, it was supposed to span 116.4 kilometres. Along with the fourth city Metro connectivity of 40 kilometres will be put on hold, the officials announced on Tuesday. Authorities are going forward with the project, aiming to serve eight lakh passengers daily once completed.

"The fourth city is still a virgin concept. According to the recommendation by the government, we have strategically prioritised five corridors based on immediate urban mobility needs and technical feasibility," said NVS Reddy, Hyderabad Airport Metro Limited (HAML) managing director.

He added that detailed project reports for these corridors have been made, and the next step is to “break ground” by January 2025.

Meanwhile, the authorities have already submitted all the documents, including DPR, Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) etc, to the Union ministry of housing and urban affairs (MoHUA). These will evaluate the technical and financial elements of the project.

What is The First Step?

Authorities have decided to begin the work on 7.5-km Old City corridor expansion from MBGS to Chandrayangutta. Awards are scheduled in the third week of December. Meanwhile, demolitions and utility shifting will start by the year-end.

Highlight of the Hyderabad Metro Phase 2

The phase 2 of this project is designed to have a double-decker flyover, which would be the first such infrastructure in Hyderabad. It is a 1.6-kilometre stretch that will comprise a metro viaduct and flyover near Madinaguda.

"For this, we have asked NHAI to halt flyover construction so that Metro works can be done simultaneously. Similarly, there are nearly six flyovers being constructed by National Highway authorities from LB Nagar to Hayathnagar, so we are going to build a Metro on the left service lane."
