Gandhinagar: The Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) is moving forward with plans for a new metro route that will connect Koteshwar Road to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International (SVPI) Airport. According to a report in Divya Bhaskar, GMRC has prepared a detailed project report (DPR) for the proposed metro line, which will pass through the Sabarmati River. The project is estimated to cost around Rs. 1,800 crore.
This four-kilometre route aims to improve connectivity for both local and airport-bound passengers. The DPR has already been submitted to the central government for approval, and once the green light is received, design work and tendering processes will begin.
A GMRC official said that passengers will benefit from interchange facilities at the Koteshwar Road metro station. This will allow commuters to easily choose whether they wish to travel towards Gandhinagar, Ahmedabad, or the airport. The new route will be a part of Phase 2 of the metro expansion, which also covers the stretch from Motera to Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar.
The report outlines that the route will have a mix of elevated and underground sections. The metro line will be elevated from Koteshwar to the Taj Hotel Circle (Ummed Hotel), and the portion from the Taj Circle to the airport will be underground. There will be four metro stations along this route, including one at the airport, which will also be underground. Passengers will be able to directly access the airport terminal via lifts and escalators.
In addition to this, GMRC has proposed another metro route—a 10-kilometre circular line within GIFT City, featuring six new stations. Both projects aim to enhance public transportation in the region and improve access to key locations.
