how it employees can cut bengaluru’s traffic by 20% – police have a solution

Bengaluru: On the occasion of World Transport Day, Bengaluru’s traffic police have called on citizens to make greater use of public transport in an effort to alleviate the city’s growing traffic congestion, reduce emissions, and promote a more sustainable future. The police have specifically urged IT employees to commit to using public transport at least once a week, as part of an initiative to encourage greener commuting habits.

According to a report in The New Indian Express, if 50 per cent of IT sector workers switched to public transport, traffic congestion in the city could be reduced by as much as 20 per cent. This is particularly significant as many in the sector rely heavily on private vehicles, contributing to overcrowded roads.

City Police Commissioner B. Dayananda, along with other senior police officials, has been asked to lead by example in promoting the use of public transport. On Sunday, as part of the World Public Transport Day celebrations, the traffic police launched a city-wide campaign encouraging residents to pledge their support for public transportation. The pledge asks citizens to use public transport for daily commutes and consider walking or cycling for shorter journeys. It also calls for the adoption of environmentally friendly travel options.

During the event, Commissioner Dayananda emphasised the multiple benefits of using public transport, including BMTC buses, metro services, and autorickshaws. He highlighted how such alternatives could ease traffic congestion and reduce harmful emissions that contribute to air pollution.

Shivaprakash Devaraju, Traffic-South, pointed out that public transport is one of the most effective solutions to help make Bengaluru a greener city and tackle its traffic challenges. Additionally, the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) took to social media to raise awareness about the environmental benefits of reducing the number of private cars and two-wheelers on the road, noting that fewer vehicles lead to less congestion and lower emissions.

The initiative reflects a growing concern for the city’s sustainability and is part of ongoing efforts to reduce Bengaluru’s carbon footprint while improving the overall quality of life for its citizens.
