Hyderabad: A 68-year-old woman from Tandur has been left bedridden, with complete loss of sensation in one leg, after receiving treatment from an unqualified practitioner two months ago. The incident came to light on Friday when the woman’s family had a confrontation with the accused, Mukith, a quack. Upon discovering the malpractice, the Telangana State Medical Council (TGMC) has decided to take up the case suo moto and file an FIR against Mukith.
Mukith had been on TGMC’s radar and had previously escaped a raid at his clinic in Daulatabad, Vikarabad, two weeks ago. He had administered three steroid injections to the patient, Lakshmibai, who sought relief for knee pain. These injections led to severe complications, including sepsis in the knee joint, swelling, and fever. Lakshmibai was eventually rushed to a qualified doctor, who had to perform surgery to remove the infected tissue.
As per a TOI report, the Orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Santosh Kumar, who is treating Lakshmibai, explained that the steroid injections were inappropriate for her condition, causing extensive damage to the knee joint. Although the leg was saved, it remains unstable and lacks sensation. The family also lost a significant amount of money while seeking treatment from the quack. “She was given three steroid injections in the knee joints. These injections are prescribed only for certain conditions… When she came to me, her entire knee joint was damaged due to sepsis. The family also lost all their money in getting treatment from the quack. Although her leg was saved, it is completely unstable and has no sensation…” (sic.)
Mukith had been one of seven unqualified practitioners raided by TGMC officials, leading to six FIRs in areas like Parigi, Moinabad, and Daulatabad. "We had prescriptions of Mukith, but when the raid started in Daulatabad, he got the information through their network. He shut down the clinic and fled." (sic.)
