holtermann bakery refused to serve whoopi goldberg over her political views? controversy explained

A bakery based in Staten Islands, New York, has landed in hot waters after ABC's 'The View' host Whoopi Goldberg alleged that they refused her service over her liberal political views.

Goldberg claimed on Wednesday's episode of 'The View' that she was with her friends at the bakery in Staten Island to celebrate her 69th birthday with Charlotte Russe desserts. However, she claimed that the bakery gave her an excuse and refused to serve her because of her political views. Although she did not identify the bakery, a popular tabloid identified it as Holtermann's Bakery.

"They said that their ovens had gone down, all kinds of stuff, but folks went and got them anyway, which is why I’m not telling you who made them," she said on live TV. Despite the bakery not explicitly saying so, she said she believed it was because "they did not like my politics."

She also revealed that the Charlotte Russe desserts were her late mother's favourite and her birthday celebrations fell through after the bad experience at the restaurant.

“But that’s OK because, you know what? Listen, this is my mother’s celebration. Pick these up and celebrate with me and my mom. Thank you everyone for celebrating my birthday today,” Goldberg added.

Notably, Holtermann's Bakery is a 145-year-old bakery in Staten Island that is popular among locals. It is a family-run business and is known for its famous Kringlers. After the incident, the current owner of the bakery, Jill Holtermann, denied the claims and said that refusing Goldberg was not because of political” reasons. "We were having trouble with our boilers,” she said.
