have you heard about the garh ganesh temple, perched on a hill in jaipur?

Tucked away on the Aravali hills near Jaipur’s famous Nahargarh Fort, the Garh Ganesh Temple is a hidden gem that not many tourists are aware of. Dedicated to Lord Ganesha, this ancient temple offers a unique combination of spirituality, history, and breathtaking views of the Pink City. If you’re a traveller seeking offbeat cultural experiences in Jaipur, the Garh Ganesh Temple is a must-visit.

What Makes Garh Ganesh Temple Unique

The Garh Ganesh Temple was built in the 18th century by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, the founder of Jaipur. According to local legend, the temple was constructed before the official establishment of Jaipur, and the Maharaja prayed to Lord Ganesha here for blessings and protection over the new city. What sets this temple apart is its unique idol of Ganesha—depicted in a childlike form (baal roop) called Purushakriti, without the iconic elephant head.

Located atop the Kadamb Dungri Hill, the journey to the Garh Ganesh Temple is as rewarding as the destination itself. To reach the temple, you must climb approximately 365 steps. While the climb may sound daunting, it is usually doable with adequate breaks in the middle. As you ascend, you’re treated to panoramic vistas of Jaipur, including the majestic City Palace, Hawa Mahal, and Jal Mahal. The temple is especially beautiful during sunrise or sunset, offering panoramic views of the surrounding hills and forts. According to the temple’s website, it is also said that this location was chosen by the king so that the shrine of Lord Ganesh would be visible from his residence – the Chandra Mahal in City Palace.

While the temple doesn’t feature in prominent city itineraries, it sees many devotees, especially during Ganesh Chaturthi, when grand celebrations take place. For those seeking a deeper spiritual connection, early morning prayers and aartis are a serene experience, away from the usual crowds of more popular temples.

Once you’ve visited the Garh Ganesh Temple, you can explore other prominent city attractions such as the Nahargarh Fort and Jaigarh Fort, both of which are located nearby. Additionally, the famous Amber/Amer Fort is also a short drive away.

How to get to Garh Ganesh Temple

Located about 5 kilometres from the centre of Jaipur, the temple is accessible by both taxis and auto-rickshaws. But from the base of the hill, you’ll have to climb on foot. It is therefore not ideal for people who are old or have issues with climbing.
