The right-arm pacer joined the leadership group in 2022 and led the team in the one-off Test match against England. Bumrah was Rohit Sharma's deputy in the home series against England and looked set to retain his position.
But the BCCI decided against naming Rohit's deputy for the first Test against Bangladesh. No reason was provided behind it. With India set to tour Australia later in the year, the selectors will have to ink on a vice-captain soon. Shubman has taken over the job in white-ball cricket. A clear word on the vice-captain should be out before the Australia tour.

KL Rahul was once a regular vice-captain and he also led Team India in Rohit's and Virat's absence. His below-par performance in Test cricket saw the selectors take a tough call and he was removed from the position during the Test series against Australia in 2023.
Before Rahul, Rohit was named the vice-captain but he never held this position on a full-time basis. Rohit missed the South Africa tour in 2022 and became the captain after the series. Before Rohit, Ajinkya Rahane was Virat Kohli's deputy for more than four years. He also led the team in Virat's absence.
