Director Hansal Mehta has reacted to comparisons between his latest film The Buckingham Murders starring Kareena Kapoor Khan and Kate Winslet’s Mare of Easttown. Responding to a post on X (formerly Twitter), the filmmaker addressed the allegations about the parallels, that many raised on social media after watching its trailer recently.
Alleged similarities between Mare of Easttown and The Buckingham Murders
According to the plot, both Mare of Easttown (2021) and The Buckingham Murders follow its female leads Kate and Kareena respectively, who play detectives investigating the murder of a child in a small town. As they dig deeper into the case, they realise every resident of the town is a suspect in the crime. The canvas, mood and air of the two projects seem strikingly similar, as said by many.

A user raised the point on X. The tweet read, "Mare of Easttown… God please! Plz get something original…" Mehta replied to the particular post and wrote, "Decide after you watch. Don’t jump to conclusions."
Kareena Kapoor Khan on the alleged similarities
At the trailer launch of The Buckingham Murders, Kareena said, “The script came to me a year before Mare of Easttown was released. Actors should draw inspiration from other actors; it is kind of a motivation to make you want to do better. I am a huge Kate Winslet fan and I watch her work closely.”

The film follows Jasmeet Bhamra (Kareena Kapoor Khan), a detective and mother who has lost her own child. She is assigned an investigation of the murder of a 10-year-old in Buckinghamshire.
