hagga movie review rope unravels into a tangled mess of suspense and letdown

Labelled as an action-packed suspense thriller with fantasy elements, Hagga ultimately falls short of its potential. Although the film’s premise centers on the mysterious killings of elderly women in a village, a classic whodunit, the narrative is marred by an overemphasis on melodramatic subplots involving the lead actor’s romantic escapades.

While the film attempts to infuse additional excitement through supernatural elements, this approach largely detracts from the core mystery. The result is a film that, despite its intriguing premise, fails to deliver a cohesive and engaging thriller experience.

The true essence of Hagga is in suspense with the introduction of Anu Prabhakar’s fantasy role. The supernatural element features a mystical rope endowed with special powers, linked to a compelling backstory.

Synopsis

Set in a remote village near a forest, Hagga opens with a harrowing scene: an elderly woman is dragged with a rope around her neck, hanged from a tree and then set ablaze. As she dies, villagers express their anger at the victim’s family for defying strict instructions against bringing such women back into the village.

The community is shocked by a series of brutal murders involving the hanging and burning of elderly women. These killings seem to be linked to the birth of babies, particularly girls, in the village. The pattern suggests that the elderly women in the families where new girls are born become the victims of these mysterious and horrific acts.

Whodunit in simple terms, Hagga gets supernatural in the end. While that is the gist of it the rest of the drama is a big letdown with hardly anything to ‘hang on’.

Technical and performances

In terms of technical execution, Hagga stands out primarily for its visual effects (VFX) and computer-generated imagery (CGI), particularly in the scenes featuring Anu Prabhakar’s supernatural role. Outside of these aspects, the film falls short, with much of the rest appearing ordinary and lackluster.

The initial segments of the movie, before the supernatural elements take hold, are notably flat and unremarkable. The film's writing, in particular, is a significant letdown.

In terms of performances, Anu Prabhakar and Bhavani Prakash contribute notable value, supported by seasoned actors. However, the struggles of the remaining cast are evident on screen.

Final take

There is barely anything substantial to hold onto with this rope. Without Anu Prabhakar's involvement and bits of fantasy, Hagga would ultimately be a significant disappointment.
