google's gemini 2.0 ai model expected to launch in december with major updates

As per rumours, Google is set to unveil its next AI model, Gemini 2.0, sometime later this year. Following the launch of Gemini 1.0 in December 2023, Google wanted to align with its yearly schedule and plans for Gemini 2.0 to be unveiled in December. The Verge reports this new model could have a "broad release," yet some sources say that Gemini 2.0 might not deliver the performance leap that DeepMind co-founder Demis Hassabis's AI team originally set out for. Other tech giants have cited this slackening learning curve for AI as well.

Gemini’s Evolution and Current Offerings

Gemini 1.0 made its entrance into the field in 2023 with a wide selection of functionalities, including Pro and Ultra variants. The Pro variant was made available on Bard's platform, before it was rebranded, while a Nano version found its way on the Pixel 8 Pro. Additionally, an expanded context window was introduced in Gemini 1.5, which greatly enhanced the capabilities of user interactions and arrived for subscribers in May. In every successive iteration, Google has brought in substantial improvements to ease and heighten the utility for the developers and end users as well.

Gemini 2.0 and Competing Releases

The December launch of Gemini 2.0 might mimic Google's dual-availability strategy, where developers and the general public will be allowed access through platforms like gemini.google.com. Meanwhile, Project Astra, a complementary artificial intelligence project, will reportedly bring camera capabilities and vision to Gemini Live; however, its release remains shrouded in secrecy.

OpenAI’s Orion Model to Rival Gemini 2.0

OpenAI's Orion Model will set out to Compete against Gemini 2.0. Despite the company's denials, some of the model releases by Orion may coincide with Google's expansions in AI, supposedly by December. Upon release, Orion's rollout would mainly have two key partners and would, thus, have less general access than Google's offering. Google's cycle of a yearly release schedule could help keep its offerings fresh between May I/O developer events.
