google maps set for major updates in india to enhance navigation experience- exclusive chat with google maps vice president miriam daniel

Google Maps is set to unveil a series of significant updates aimed at revolutionising navigation for users in India. With a focus on overcoming challenges in both urban and rural areas, these enhancements leverage advanced technology, including AI and landmark-based addressing.

In an exclusive interview with Times Now, Miriam Daniel, Vice President and General Manager of Google Maps, shares series of significant updates, which are aimed at transforming navigation for users in country like India. These enhancements are particularly focused on addressing challenges in both urban and rural environments.

Flyover Navigation Feature

When asked about the introduction of the flyover navigation feature, Daniel explained, “We’re rolling out this feature city by city, starting with major metro areas. Our goal is to ensure that our satellite and street views effectively utilise AI to understand images and identify where flyovers are, including entry and exit points.” This initiative aims to provide clearer guidance for drivers, alleviating frustrations related to navigating flyovers.

Asked about the rollout timeline, Daniel said, “The updates will occur based on traffic patterns, gradually expanding to more cities outside the major ones.” This strategic approach ensures that the updates are refined before being introduced to a broader audience.

Enhancement of Offline Mapping with local partners

While taking internet connectivity issues in rural India into consideration, Daniel, at sidelines of 'Make in India- Advancing Space and Geospatial Industry Ecosystem' event organised by Geospatial World and Geospatial World Chamber of Commerce, highlighted Google’s commitment to enhancing offline mapping capabilities. “Users can download maps for specific areas, making them accessible anytime, even without internet connectivity,” she stated. Google is also collaborating with local partners like Genesis and Tech Mahindra to effectively map rural areas, recognising the frequent changes in rural infrastructure.

Narrow Roads Feature: Roads where 4-wheelers can't go?

Throwing light on Google Maps’ new feature for identifying narrow roads in both urban and rural settings, Daniel said, “We use AI to highlight where roads are narrow, ensuring users are aware of which vehicles can navigate those areas, like two wheelers on a particular road.” This feature aims to enhance safety and provide clearer information to drivers.

Landmark-based Addressing Feature: 1st time in India

One of the key features Google Maps is set to introduce in India is landmark-based addressing, which would be the first time in India. Daniel explained, “Instead of merely providing a street address, we are adapting to local preferences by allowing users to refer to familiar landmarks. For instance, people might say, ‘It’s right next to that temple’ or ‘near that medical shop.’” This landmark-based approach aims to make navigation more intuitive, particularly in rural areas where natural features—such as a prominent building or temple—can serve as effective markers.

Recognising Local Guides

In discussing the recognition of contributions from the Local Guides community, Daniel revealed that India has around 60,000 monthly local guide contributors, making it the largest contributor country. “These local guides provide essential information that helps small merchants be discovered by the community,” she added.

Looking to the future, Daniel expressed optimism about Google's investments in India. “We are committed to investing in India, particularly in geospatial technology, education, and public infrastructure,” she said. “Our focus is on developing solutions tailored to the complexities of India’s landscape.”
