Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport is set to revolutionise passenger experience with the introduction of India's first air train system. This ambitious project aims to provide seamless connectivity between the airport's terminals, parking lots, and other facilities, significantly enhancing passenger convenience and reducing travel time.
This innovative project aims to connect Terminals 1, 2, 3, Aerocity, and Cargo City, providing a seamless and efficient transportation experience for passengers. The proposed air train, or Automated People Mover (APM), will cover a distance of 7.7 kilometres and feature four stations. It is expected to significantly reduce travel time between the terminals, eliminating the need for shuttle buses or walking long distances.
DIAL has already issued the tender for the construction of this project, and bids are anticipated to be received in October and November of this year, according to reports by TOI. The winning bidder will be selected based on factors such as cost and revenue share models or viability gap funding.

One of the most pressing challenges facing IGIA is the need for seamless connectivity between its terminals, especially for the growing number of transit passengers. With an estimated 25% of passengers being transit travellers, the airport cannot rely solely on shuttle buses or walking to ensure smooth transfers between Terminal 1 and Terminals 2 and 3. If the project proceeds as planned, the air train system is expected to be operational by the end of 2027. This ambitious initiative aligns with the Indian government's vision of modernising the country's transportation infrastructure and enhancing passenger convenience.
