frisking row: bjp counters uddhav thackeray's claims with video showing devendra fadnavis' luggage being checked

Mumbai: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday shared a video showing officials inspecting Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’ bags, in a counter to Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray's claims.

Maharashtra unit of BJP posted a video on X (formerly Twitter) showing officials inspecting Fadnavis’ bags, with a caption, "The Constitution should not only be taken for show, but constitutional arrangements must also be followed.”

“At Yavatmal, our leader Devendra Fadnavis’ bag was checked, yet he neither made a video nor caused an uproar," the BJP posted on X. The party mentioned that on November 5, Fadnavis’ bags were checked by officials at Kolhapur airport.

The response from Maharashtra BJP came days after former CM Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena (UBT) posted videos online showing his luggage being checked by election authorities over the past two days. The BJP remarked in its post that some leaders have a habit of creating “drama.”

In the last two days, Uddhav Thackeray raised objections to his bags being inspected by polling authorities upon his arrival in the Yavatmal and Latur districts, where he was campaigning for the state assembly elections scheduled for November 20.

Thackeray had questioned if the same checks are applied to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other senior leaders of the ruling alliance during their election campaigns. In a video circulating on social media, Thackeray is heard saying, “I won’t stop you from performing your duties, search whatever you want, but did you search the bags of Narendra Modi, Devendra Fadnavis, or Amit Shah?”

Maharashtra will go to the polls on November 20, with counting scheduled for November 23.
