Chandigarh: Days ahead of the assembly polls in Haryana, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday expelled former state minister Ranjit Singh Chautala and seven other leaders for six years. The decision was taken after the eight leaders decided to contest the assembly polls as independent candidates.

Haryana BJP chief Mohan Lal Badoli expelled these leaders. Besides Chautala, Sandeep Garg (contesting the polls from Ladwa), Zile Ram Sharma (Assandh), Devender Kadian (Ganaur), Bachan Singh Arya (Safidon), Radha Ahlawat (Meham), Naveen Goel (Gurugram) and Kehar Singh Rawat (Hathin) have been expelled from the saffron party.

Chautala decided to quit the saffron party after he was denied the poll ticket from Rania. In the 2019 assembly polls, he won the seat as independent candidate, However, before the Lok Sabha polls 2024, he quit the resigned as MLA and joined the BJP. He was fielded by the saffron party from Hisar. Chautala lost the parliamentary polls.

Notably, on Friday, the Haryana Congress also expelled 13 leaders or "anti-party activities" over their decision to contest the polls as independent candidates. On Sunday also, the Haryana Congress expelled two more leaders – Virender Gogria from Uchana Kalan and Somvir Ghasola from Badhra – from the party for the next six years. Both expelled leaders are contesting independently from their seats when denied tickets.

The 90-member Haryana Assembly is scheduled to go to polls on October 5 and the counting of votes will be taken up on October 8. The BJP is eyeing to return to power in the state for a third consecutive term. Meanwhile, the Congress is trying its best to return to power after 10 years.
