India Face Daunting Task To Win Pune Test vs New Zealand; Need To Achieve Feat Only Done Twice In 92 Years
The result means that for the first time in 41 years, India has lost three home tests in a calendar year. Before the twin defeats against New Zealand, the Rohit Sharma-led team lost the first test of a five-match Test series against England at Hyderabad by 28 runs. However, the home team recovered to win the remaining four Test matches and seal an emphatic 4-1 victory in the series.
This is the only time in India's 92-year-old history of playing Test cricket that they have lost three home tests in a year. The first time this happened was in 1969, when they lost four Tests at home, with one defeat against New Zealand at Nagpur and three against Australia in Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai.
The second instance occurred in 1983, just months after winning the World Cup with a 3-0 defeat in a Test series against the West Indies, with the visitors winning Test matches in Kanpur, Ahmedabad, and Kolkata.
