The condition is called dyspareunia. We spoke to Dr Manvi Verma, Cosmetic Gynecologist & Female Sexologist about its diagnosis and treatment. It is essential to consult the doctor without any further delay for managing pain.

Dyspareunia means pain in the genital area or pelvis during sexual intercourse. Moreover, this pain can be sharp or intense and discomforting. It can occur before, during, or after sexual intercourse and make one stressed or anxious. It is commonly seen in women when compared to men and can strain their relationship with their partners. Women with dyspareunia may struggle with depression and low self-esteem too. Women with this condition will often avoid discussions regarding this topic due to the stigma attached to it. Those with this condition will often be embarrassed, frustrated, lonely agitated, and ashamed.

The causes of pain during sexual activity can be attributed to a wide range of factors such as vaginal dryness that happens due to menopause, pregnancy, breastfeeding and certain medications, skin problems, yeast and urinary tract infections, trauma, accident, childbirth, hysterectomy, vulvodynia, vaginitis, endometriosis, uterine fibroids, vaginismus, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and pelvic floor dysfunction. This condition is seen in approximately 4 out of every 7 women.

Symptoms

Diagnosis

This condition can be diagnosed with the help of a pelvic exam, ultrasound, and laparoscopy. Follow the treatment advice given by the doctor after the confirmed diagnosis. Don’t just try any products or treatment options on your own without informing the doctor.

Treatment
