India is celebrating National Engineers Day 2024 today, September 15. The day is observed on the birt anniversary of Bharat Ratna Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya who was India's first Engineer. It was in year 1968 when Indian government declared M Visvesvaraya's birth anniversary as Engineers' Day. From dams to hydro-power projects, he oversaw the construction of several architectural marvels as chief engineer. One of the most popular metro station of Delhi has been named after him, Sir Vishweshwaraiah Moti Bagh station.

Last year the National Engineers' Day theme was 'Engineering for a Sustainable Future.' The aim was to encourage engineers to come up with solutions that meet the modern-day facilities with a sustainable approach.

Interesting facts about M Visvesvaraya

  • M Visvesvaraya completed his schooling in India and went to persue BA at the University of Madras. However, he later switched streams and pursued a diploma in civil engineering at the College of Science in Pune.
  • In 1912, he was appointed as the Dewan by the Maharaja of Mysore.
  • The Maharashtra government offered him the job of Assistant Engineer at Nasik.
  • He was the brain behind the Krishnaraja Sagar dam in Mysore.
  • His pioneering work in civil engineering and infrastructure influenced modern engineering practices and national development in India.
  • In 1917, he helped in establishing the Government Engineering College at Bangalore. It was later renamed as Visvesvaraya College of Engineering and Technology.
  • From pioneering electricity and founding HAL to shaping Bengaluru's tech landscape, his work laid the foundation for modern India.
