emergency: makers of kangana ranaut's political drama seek two weeks to comply with changes suggested by cbfc

After a month-long struggle, the makers of Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency have good news for the audience. The political drama got postponed due to delayed certification. Now, as per the latest development, the makers of the film informed the Bombay High Court on Friday that the matter has been ‘worked out’.

Emergency release date update

As per LiveLaw, the makers of Kangana’s Emergency told a division bench of Justices Burgess Colabawalla and Firdosh Pooniwalla that the issue regarding the cuts and edits suggested by the Central Board of Film Certification will be implemented so that the film can be released in theatres.

Senior Advocate Sharan Jagtiani for Zee Studios reportedly said the matter between the the production house, Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), and Kangana’s Manikarnika Films Productions has been solved. The advocate further informed the Bombay High Court that the makers would at least need two weeks to comply with the changes suggested by the revising committee of the CBFC. Post that, the censor board would clear the film and issue a certificate.

CBFC vs makers of Emergency

According to the legal team of Emergency, the CBFC had granted an e-certificate. However, a couple of days before the film’s initial release in September, they refused to give the hard copy citing objections raised by the Sikh Community against the political drama.

In the previous hearing, the division bench of Justices B P Colabawalla and Firdosh Pooniwalla came down heavily on the CBFC for not deciding on issuing a certificate for Emergency. Reportedly, the Bombay High Court said the censor board cannot sit on a fence and has to take its decision one way or the other as it would otherwise amount to curtailing the freedom of speech and expression. The court had directed the CBFC to take its decision by September 25.

Emergency is a biographical political thriller about the life of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, who imposed a 21-month emergency period from 1975 to 1977. In addition to Kangana, the film also features Anupam Kher, the late Satish Kaushik, Shreyas Talpade, and Mahima Chaudhry.
