It is that time of year when Goa starts seeing an influx of tourists. However, this year, the state has made headlines not for its pleasant weather or serene beaches but due to concerns over tourism infrastructure and an alleged decline in tourist numbers. Several people on social media have raised concerns about high costs, from cabs to hotels. Users have compared the Indian beach destination to international spots, raising questions about the "health of the state's tourism sector."
Following widespread criticism, the state government issued a clarification, stating that comparing a state in India to another country like Sri Lanka might present a misleading perspective.
In a statement, the Department of Tourism said it wished to provide an accurate update. "It is important to note that Goa is a state within India, whereas destinations Goa is being compared to, like Sri Lanka, are countries. Comparing a state to a country can create a misleading perspective."

The statement came after social media posts claimed a decline in tourism, with some users stating that tourists are opting for international destinations like Sri Lanka, Thailand, or Vietnam. High costs, limited public transport, and issues like a "local taxi mafia" are believed to be possible reasons for the alleged decline.
The department, however, acknowledged the challenges with “limited scheduled international air connectivity” but noted that efforts are underway with the central government to improve this through expanded point-of-call options and additional seat entitlements for Goa. These changes aim to strengthen international access to the state and maintain Goa’s appeal to a diverse tourist base.
Despite these challenges, Goa saw over 80 lakh domestic visitors in 2023, a significant increase from pre-pandemic numbers. Meanwhile, 4.5 lakh international tourists visited the state last year, showing a gradual recovery compared to the COVID-19

pandemic slump. In 2020, only 3.03 lakh foreign tourists visited Goa, with numbers dropping further to 22,000 in 2021 amid the second wave. However, by 2022, foreign visitor numbers rebounded to 1.75 lakh, though they remain below pre-pandemic figures, which peaked at 9.37 lakh in 2019.
The department also highlighted a shift towards sustainable tourism, prioritising quality over quantity to ensure tourism supports both the environment and local communities.
