'don't run after wickets': mohammed siraj recollects jasprit bumrah's advice that helped him regain lost touch

India pacer Mohammed Siraj has revealed that he spoke with Jasprit Bumrah ahead of the first Test against Australia regarding his off-form and the latter asked him to just 'enjoy' his bowling, which ultimately helped him succeed in Perth. Albeit the second in line behind Bumrah, Siraj has taken up Mohammed Shami's role brilliantly and has ably supported the former.

Siraj managed just two wickets across as many appearances during India's home series against New Zealand ahead of the tour Down Under, but looked back to his best in the opening Test against Australia in Perth when he collected five scalps in a crucial World Test Championship win.

Siraj admitted that it was a few words with stand-in captain and one of the best bowlers across the world, Bumrah, ahead of the Australia series that pumped him up for the first Test in Perth.

"I always keep talking to Jassi bhai. Even before the first match, I spoke with him about what I was going through. And he just told me one thing, don’t run (chase) after wickets, just keep bowling consistently in one area and enjoy your bowling,” Siraj told the media after India’s pink-ball practice game against the Prime Minister’s XI in Canberra on Sunday, December 1.

"Australia is a place where a pacer enjoys because you get pace and bounce. As a pacer, you get everything you want. So you get a different kind of confidence to come and enjoy your bowling here," Siraj added.

India will play the second Test against Australia, a pink-ball game, from December 6 in Adelaide. It will be India's first pink-ball Test Down Under since they were bowled out for only 36 during the second innings of the first Test in the 2020-21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

"I think that with the pink-ball, it's better to bowl back of length. Because pitching it up, there's not a lot of swing, so the more you hit the deck and get it to seam, it will be better for us," Siraj said.

This will be the Indian pacer's first outing in Adelaide, having played in all the other venues Down Under before. Siraj has picked 18 wickets in four Tests in Australia, at an impressive economy of 2.82.
