President-elect Donald Trump has repeatedly spoken about shutting down the federal Department of Education and relegate all responsibility to states. The Republican's richest backer, billionaire Elon Musk, thinks it's a 'good idea'. The move could affect funding for K-12 schools and has been criticised by several experts.
Former President Jimmy Carter created the Department of Education in 1979. Trump claims that the department is an example of poor investment for taxpayers, saying that Americans spend three time more money on education that any other country 'and yet we are absolutely at the bottom, we're one of the worst'.

The Republican baselessly said that the Department of Education is staffed by many people who 'hate our children' and 'we want states to run the education of our children, because they’ll do a much better job of it. You can’t do worse'.
“We will drain the government education swamp and stop the abuse of your taxpayer dollars to indoctrinate America’s youth with all sorts of things that you don’t want to have our youth hearing,” Trump said during a rally in September.
