dk shivakumar visits new york's famous sky-deck, wishes to give 'bengaluru's skyline new definition'

Bengaluru: Karnataka’s Deputy Chief Minister, DK Shivakumar, visited New York’s famous sky-deck, ‘The Edge,’ as part of his plans to construct a similar structure in Bengaluru. During his USA trip, the DCM inspected the sky-deck’s architecture and design features, accompanied by his wife, Usha.

The Edge, located on the 100th floor of a building in Hudson Yards, offers a stunning 360-degree view of New York City. Spanning 7,500 square feet and made entirely of glass from floor to ceiling, the sky-deck provides a bird's-eye view of the bustling city below.

DK Shivakumar met with renowned architect Dr. Babu Kilara to discuss the proposed sky-deck in Bengaluru. Along with Dr. Kilara, the DCM visited several skyscrapers in New York to gain further insights into modern architectural designs.

The Deputy Chief Minister also held discussions with Kenneth Drucker, an architect from the global design firm HOK, who has played a significant role in building iconic structures like the World Trade Centre in New York, the Shanghai Tower in China, and Dubai’s Burj Khalifa.

Reflecting on the potential impact of the sky-deck project, DK Shivakumar remarked, “If modern technology is combined with strong thoughts, the sky-deck may bring a new definition to Bengaluru’s skyline as well as improve the quality of urban development.”

The sky-deck is envisioned to become a key addition to Bengaluru’s urban landscape, showcasing cutting-edge architectural design and enhancing the city’s skyline.

In a major boost to Bengaluru's infrastructure, the Karnataka Cabinet has approved the construction of the Bengaluru Skydeck, which will be the tallest structure in South Asia. The project is expected to cost Rs 500 crores and will stand around 250 metres high, offering a 360-degree view of the city.

To put this into perspective, the Skydeck will be over three times taller than Delhi’s Qutub Minar, which is 73 metres tall. Currently, Bengaluru’s tallest building is the CNTC Presidential Tower at 160 metres, making the Skydeck a record-setting addition to the skyline.

The Skydeck will be built along NICE Road on Bengaluru's outskirts. Initially, the government planned to build it in the city centre, but two key challenges emerged. First, finding 25 acres of land in central Bengaluru was difficult. Second, the Defence Ministry raised concerns due to the presence of military facilities, and the risks of having a tall structure near military airports. These issues led to the decision to build it outside the city centre.
