director samir karnik on 17 years of nanhe jaisalmer: bobby deol was my biggest support | exclusive

It is interesting to see how history repeats itself. 53 years ago a remarkable debutante named Jaya Bhaduri bunked school to get Dharmendra's autograph in Hrishikesh Mukherjee's Guddi. In 2007, young Dwij Yadav, who’s a bundle of over-ripe adult expressions packaged in the cutest turban, is also a diehard fan of Dharmendra’s son Bobby Deol. Sparks fly between the star and the boy in this underrated little gem of a film.

Director Samir Karnik looks back at 17 years of Nanhe Jaisalmer

Samir, how time flies!

Thank you so much for your love and support in making Nanhe so special. Where do I begin? When I was down and out Nanhe Jaisalmer gave me the inspiration to stand again.

Back then, you and Bobby were thick as thieves?

My biggest support was Bobby Deol who trusted me and had faith in the film and said this is not a run of the mill film. He believed in the story and said let’s do this.

The little boy stole every scene from Bobby?

Dwij Yadav as Nanhe can never be replaced. The chemistry between Bobby and Nanhe cannot be described in words. They used to help each other out. I remember Dwij memorised the entire script with everyone’s dialogues and in a running shot Bobby forgot a line and Dwij was prompting him, Bobby burst out laughing seeing the sincerity and the honesty of the little fellow.

Their onscreen bonding looked so real!

There was a moment in an emotional scene Nanhe broke down crying, after ‘cut’ Nanhe was inconsolable and Bobby held on to him like a father figure.

I remember how pleased you were after the shooting?

I personally learnt a lot from Nanhe Jaisalmer, what knowledge Bobby was giving Nanhe was also a lesson for my life. Nanhe Jaisalmer is my favourite film, in my career of 22 years. I relish and cherish every moment of that film, fighting against all odds Bobby stood by me like a rock and his friendship to me is the same bond between Nanhe Jaisalmer and Bobby Deol.

Bobby after Animal is in another league?

Bobby is all heart and today after achieving so much success he is still the same all heart. Nanhe Jaisalmer will always be the closest film to my heart. I believe if today Nanhe was re-released people would still relate to the film and learn something in life. I thank the cast, crew and you for making this my best movie till today.
