Laapataa Ladies is in the Oscars 2025 race as India’s official entry. As the nominations are yet to be announced, Kiran Rao is taking the film to different corners of the globe. Recently, the dramedy was screened at the Asian World Film Festival. During an interaction, director Kiran revealed why Aamir Khan wasn’t cast in the film despite his insistence.

While Kiran justified her decision, Aamir humorously accused the filmmaker of doubting his acting abilities. She went on to reveal what made her think that way. Kiran said, "Obviously, his screen test was good, and he wanted to play that role. But I felt that the balance of the film would have tipped a little."

It is no secret that Aamir was eager to play the character of Sub-Inspector Shyam Manohar, which was eventually portrayed brilliantly by Ravi Kishan in Laapataa Ladies. Kiran shared that Aamir’s screen test was strong, but she felt casting him would have made the film too predictable. Recalling the casting phase, Aamir said, “I wanted to play a character in the movie; she didn’t allow me. I wanted to play that cop and even went for the screen test but got rejected. I was keen on playing that role, but Kiran and I discussed it. I think my screen test was very good, but we decided to go with Ravi Kishan. Both of us took that decision.”

Kiran added, “Now, everyone knows that the character does a flip in the end, even though he stays kind of grey throughout the film. It shows that he has an empathetic side to him. But with Aamir, you would have expected him to do something like this in the end because he is Aamir Khan.”

Laapataa Ladies also stars Pratibha Ranta, Nitanshi Goel, Sparsh Shrivastava, Chhaya Kadam and Ravi Kishan. The film is being promoted as Lost Ladies internationally.
