However, then-President Trump abruptly cancelled secret peace talks with Taliban leaders that were set to take place at Camp David in September 2019. The president called off the meeting after the Taliban claimed responsibility for a deadly attack in Afghanistan that killed 12 people, including a U.S. service member. The attack took place just days before the planned meeting, leading Trump to halt negotiations that had aimed to bring an end to the 18-year war in Afghanistan.
In a separate event, two years earlier, then-President Trump took decisive action on national security grounds by blocking a proposed acquisition of Lattice Semiconductor Corporation, an Oregon-based company, by a Chinese investment fund, Canyon Bridge Merger Sub. The Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) recommended the move, citing concerns that the deal could threaten U.S. national security.
