Former Clemson wide receiver Diondre Overton has died, a team official and several of his colleagues confirmed on Saturday afternoon. While the 26-year-old's cause of death was not disclosed, reports on social media said the WR was shot in Greensboro, North Carolina. However, these users did not back the claim with evidence.
“Clemson Football and the entire Clemson Family mourns the passing of Clemson alumnus Diondre Overton. Our thoughts are with his family and friends,” Clemson wrote in a post on X, platform formerly known as Twitter.

Several former Tigers players posted tributes to Diondre Overton, who played wide receiver for the team from 2016 to 2019. A popular Clemson fan Clemson Chris's Facebook post sparked speculation about Overton dying after a shooting incident in Greensboro.
"Heartbroken and I wanted to wait to post this but last night Clemson Family lost former Tiger Diondre Overton in a shooting in Greensboro. Please Pray for the Overton Family and our Clemson Family during this tragic time," he wrote.
Another avid fan on X wrote: "Former Clemson WR Diondre Overton has reportedly passed away due to a shooting that occurred last night. My prayers go out to the Overton family. Diondre will be remembered fondly by the Clemson family and he was taken from us far too soon due to a senseless tragedy. May he rest in peace❤️"

However, officials did not confirm the 26-year-old's cause of death. There are no local reports about a shooting in Greensboro on Friday.
Overton won two national championships with the Tigers. He caught 52 career passes for 777 yards and seven touchdowns.
