Dhanteras marks the beginning of the 5-day Diwali festivities that are celebrated across the country. It is celebrated on the 13th day of of the Hindu lunar calendar’s Krishna Paksha in the month of Ashwin. The festival is also known as Dhantrayodashi, Dhanvantari Trayodashi and Dhanvantari Jayanti. On this day, people worship Lord Dhanvantari who is the god of health and Ayurveda.

This year, Dhanteras will be celebrated on October 29. The puja muhurat is from 06:31 PM to 08:13 PM. The Pradosh Kaal will start at 05:38 PM and end at 08:13 PM. The Trayodashi Tithi will begin on October 29 at 10:31 AM and end on October 30 at 01:15 PM.

Dhanteras Rituals

  • Start the day by cleaning the house and taking a bath before sunrise. Then wear clean clothes.
  • Decorate the entrance of your house with rangoli. Also, make sure to clean your place of work and decorate the place as well. Put flowers and garlands and make the footprints of Maa Lakshmi at the entrance.
  • Then offer Tulsi leaves, cow’s milk and butter to Lord Dhanvantari and recite the the Dhanvantari Stotra.
  • You can also worship Lord Kuber and Maa Lakshmi.
  • Then, make any purchase during the auspicious muhurat and make sure to offer them to Maa Lakshmi before using them.
  • In the evening, make a four-faced lamp using flour and fill it with mustard or sesame oil. Light it and place it outside your home.

Dhanteras Significance

Dhanteras is a day when people acquire new assets, jewellery made of gold, and silver, and utensils. It is believed that it can bring prosperity into one’s home. The day is dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi. People light oil diyas and candles, to welcome the deity.
