delhi rain: delhi's rainy destiny: why is national capital receiving so much rainfall?

New Delhi: The Delhi-NCR region is experiencing incessant rainfall, adding to the waterlogging woes and traffic disruptions in many areas across the city. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a combination of factors is likely contributing to the city’s wet conditions. A ‘yellow alert’ has also been issued for the national capital on Friday.

According to a report by the Economic Times, a low-pressure system over southwestern Uttar Pradesh is causing heavy rainfall. This system, moving at 13 km/h, reached southwestern Uttar Pradesh by Thursday afternoon, impacting an area of 300 kilometres. As it advances towards Uttarakhand, it is expected to bring moderate to heavy rainfall to areas including Agra, Firozabad, Aligarh, and Badaun, as mentioned in the ET report.

"The depression is likely to weaken gradually while moving north. Consequently, the rain will also start decreasing. We are expecting more or less stable weather after this phase, and the frequency of rains will be much less by then," Mahesh Palawat from Skymet said, as quoted by Economic Times.

Delhi's primary weather station at Safdarjung recorded 29.6 mm of rainfall, while the Ridge station recorded 69.4 mm, Delhi University 56.5 mm, Lodhi Road 28.2 mm, Aya Nagar 19.5 mm, and Palam 18 mm in the last 24 hours. The late-night showers submerged many roads, leading to severe traffic jams that disrupted movement across the city, a PTI report said.

The Delhi Traffic Police shared various photos and videos of waterlogging in the city and advised people to avoid affected areas. "Traffic is affected on NH-48 in the carriageway from Dhaula Kuan towards Mahipalpur due to waterlogging at GGR PDR. Kindly plan your journey accordingly," the Delhi Traffic Police wrote in a post on X.

In another post, Delhi Traffic Police wrote, ''Traffic Alert Traffic is affected on MG road in both carriageways due to water logging near 100 foota Red Light. Commuters are advised to plan their journey accordingly.''

In several posts, the police also alerted the passengers regarding traffic affected on multiple roads, including Lala Lajpat Rai Marg in the carriageway from Kalkaji towards Defence Colony, Main Kanjhawla Road in the carriageway from Budh Vihar towards Puth Khurd, Outer Ring Road, Rohtak Road in the carriageway from Nangloi towards Tikri Border, and vice versa.
