New Delhi: Residents living in the capital should brace for heavy rainfall with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a yellow alert in Delhi for the next 72 hours. The alert that will be in place till September 13, comes after the city has recorded an unusually high number of rainy days this monsoon. According to weather experts, Delhi has recorded rainfall more than the half of what it normally receives during monsoon. Amid this, a yellow alert has been put in place, advising residents to be cautious around the areas where excessive water is accumulated. They should watch out of fallen trees, and electric poles.
So far in this monsoon, Delhi has recorded 913.1 mm of rain, which is 56 pc above normal, according to weather department data. Mahesh Palawat from Skymet Weather Services, a private forecaster, said Delhi has had an unusually high number of rainy days this year. Although July saw fewer rainy days, heavy downpours over just two or three days made a significant contribution to the overall rainfall.
August also saw more rainy days, which added to the total increase in rainfall, Palawat explained. According to the India Meteorological Department, Delhi’s main weather station at Safdarjung recorded 913.1 mm of rain this season, compared to the usual 586.9 mm. This marks a 56 per cent increase over the normal amount.
