crucial role of physiotherapy in managing low back pain and overall well-being: insights from leading experts

Low back pain (LBP) is a widespread issue, affecting 80% of people at some point in their lives. While many experience temporary relief, for some, the pain can become a persistent problem, significantly impacting their daily activities and overall quality of life.

According to Amit Pandey, Physiotherapy-Head at Asian Hospital, Faridabad, “Pain in your lower back can be brought about by a variety of reasons, the most prevalent of which is poor work posture. Leaning forward on a chair, particularly while using a computer, causes three to four times greater pressure on the spine than sitting straight. Other causes of LBP include carrying too much weight, which destroys joints and spinal discs, obesity, which alters spinal curvature, and a lack or excessive amount of activity.”

Pandey also said that conditions such as ankylosing spondylitis and age-related degenerative changes can exacerbate back pain, though genetics play only a minor role in most cases. Addressing these issues through proper posture, weight control, and regular physical activity can significantly reduce the risk of LBP.

Role of Physiotherapy in Pain Relief and Well-Being

When it comes to managing and alleviating lower back pain, consulting a healthcare provider is essential, especially if the pain persists for more than a week or two and interferes with daily activities. This is where physiotherapy plays a crucial role.

Dr Lakshya Bhaktiyani, Head of the Department of Physiotherapy at PSRI Hospital, New Delhi, stressed the transformative impact of physical therapy: “Physical therapy enhances the quality of life for patients of all ages by treating orthopaedic, neurological, and cardiopulmonary conditions through specialised care.”

Manual Therapy: Techniques and Benefits

Dr Bhaktiyani explained: “Physiotherapists' manual techniques can reduce pain and stiffness by increasing blood circulation and relaxing the affected region. This method is known as manual therapy, and it is used to mobilise, manipulate, and improve the function of the afflicted region.”

Prevention is a core component of physiotherapy, especially in managing conditions like low back pain. By identifying early warning signs, addressing muscle imbalances, and promoting proper body mechanics, physiotherapists aim to prevent injuries before they occur—particularly crucial for those in physically demanding jobs or sedentary lifestyles.

World Physiotherapy Day: Recognising the Impact of Physical Therapy

This day underscores the essential role physical therapy plays in improving health and well-being, offering a valuable opportunity to raise awareness about its benefits. As Dr Bhaktiyani noted: “World Physiotherapy Day provides a unique chance to highlight the advantages of physical therapy and its role in aiding recovery from injuries, managing chronic conditions, and enhancing overall quality of life.”
