China on Monday warned that efforts towards “Taiwan independence” and peace were “irreconcilable” as its military launched drills around the self-ruled island. “Taiwan independence and peace in the Taiwan Strait are irreconcilable,” foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said, warning that “provocations from pro-independence forces will inevitably face countermeasures”.
