Origin Of Subhan Bakery

Established in 1948 by Syed Khader, this iconic bakery is known for delicacies like Dum Ke Roat, Kharis and the classic Osmania biscuit. Syed’s journey began modestly, before founding Subhan Bakery, he worked in Secunderabad at a bakery that supplied bread to the British regiment. Later, he moved to Red Hills in Hyderabad, selling bread from a small garage. As word of his quality spread, Khader’s business grew, prompting him to set up a proper bakery in Nampally, which he named after his son, Subhan. This relocation allowed him to expand beyond bread and introduce a range of other treats, establishing Subhan Bakery’s reputation as a pioneer in Hyderabad’s bakery scene.

A Place On Nehru’s Breakfast Table

In the 1950s, when Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru visited Hyderabad, he was impressed by the breads at Subhan Bakery. Nehru, known for his refined taste, insisted on having it as part of his daily breakfast while in the city. This endorsement not only boosted Subhan’s reputation but also connected the bakery to India’s historical legacy. Even the city’s Nawabs and other dignitaries became loyal patrons of this bakery.

Popular Items In The Menu

Over the years, Subhan Bakery expanded its offerings, with items like the Dum Ke Roat becoming citywide favourites. Available in limited quantities, particularly during Muharram, it draws long queues of customers from across Hyderabad. Another signature item is the Osmania biscuit which has a distinctive recipe that’s been preserved for decades. Its subtle sweetness and crumbly texture make it a popular pairing with chai and a favourite among locals. Subhan’s biscuits and milk rusks have become staples in Hyderabadi households and during the festive seasons their plum cakes are also in high demand.

As competition increased in the 1960s, with larger bakery brands entering the market, Subhan Bakery faced the challenge of staying relevant. However, Khader and his successors adapted by expanding their product line and refining their recipes. Today, items like milk bread and chicken puffs are locals favourite at this bakery along with the classic snacks.
