chhath puja 2024 begins tomorrow with 'nahay khay'; all about the significance of this festival

Every year, Chhath Puja is celebrated with fervour. According to the Hindu lunar calendar, the grand festival of Chhath begins on the fourth day of the waxing moon in the month of Kartik. During this four-day celebration, special worship is offered to the Sun God, with rituals that emphasize cleanliness and purity. Here’s an overview of this important festival.

When is Chhath Puja in 2024?

According to the calendar, Chhath Puja starts on the fourth day of the bright half of the lunar month of Kartik and concludes on the seventh day. This year, Chhath Puja will be observed from November 5 to November 8.

Kartik Chhath Puja Calendar

November 5, 2024 (Tuesday) – Nahay Khay

November 6, 2024 (Wednesday) – Kharna

November 7, 2024 (Thursday) – Sandhya Arghya (Evening Offering)

November 8, 2024 (Friday) – Usha Arghya (Morning Offering)

How is Chhath Puja Celebrated?

  • The first day of Chhath Puja, called Nahay Khay, marks the start of the festival. On this day, devotees bathe in a holy river, which is considered especially significant, and women eat only one meal.
  • The second day is known as Kharna. On this day, women observe a fast from sunrise to sunset without consuming water.
  • On the third day, devotees continue to observe a waterless fast and offer prayers to the setting sun.
  • On the final day of the festival, women offer their prayers to the rising sun, called Usha Arghya, and conclude their fast at an auspicious time.

Important Guidelines

During Chhath Puja, it’s advised not to let others touch the utensils or items used in the ritual, as this can be believed to disrupt the sanctity of the fast. Devotees are also encouraged to eat only vegetarian, pure foods. Using old utensils is generally avoided as well.

The Significance of the Chhath Festival

Chhath Puja begins right after Diwali, on the fourth day of Kartik. This festival is dedicated to the Sun God, Surya, and devotees pray for the health, prosperity, and longevity of their loved ones. According to tradition, worshiping Chhathi Maiya, who is known as a protector of children, is an essential part of the Chhath rituals. Thus, the worship of Chhathi Maiya holds special significance during this festival.
