Chennai: Amid heavy rainfall, many Chennai residents have started parking their vehicles on flyovers to prevent damage from flooding. This precaution has been taken by the residents to avoid the costly repairs and financial losses caused by submerged cars, as the city faces recurring floods during the monsoon season, affecting vehicles and property.

How Chennai Is Preparing For North East Monsoon
Tamil Nadu CM has instructed the IT companies to allow employees to work from home from October 14 to October 17. Further, a holiday has been announced on Tuesday for the four districts for all schools and colleges. The food department has been directed to ensure an adequate supply of food is kept ready during heavy rain. Aavin milk has been asked to ensure an adequate milk supply.
All district collectors have been instructed to oversee the preparations and be on standby with all precautionary measures as well as rescue measures. National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and TNDRF are on standby in case of emergencies. Tamil Nadu Electricity Board has been instructed to ensure a surplus supply of electricity and immediate rectification in case of wires getting cut.
Commenting on the situation, Deputy CM Udhayanithi Stalin said, ''We are prepared in all the ways for North East Monsoon. Even today morning the CM held a review meeting with all top officials. Let's wait and see. It's a natural thing. It's not in our hands. Whatever IMD has told, we are prepared for it in all the ways.''
What's Next For Low-Lying Areas? Chennai Mayor Elaborates
Priya Rajan, Chennai Corporation Mayor said, “From GCC, we are well prepared. CM and Dy CM has held review meetings. Everything is under control. We are focusing on low lying areas that were largely affected last year.” Greater Chennai Corporation has also placed over 900 pumps and 57 motors all around the city limits to ensure immediate draining of water and to avoid waterlogging.
She added that storm water drains have been constructed throughout the city. ''This year from June itself we have started the desilting works. We have 33 canals in Chennai. WRD has done desilting in all of them. All the departments are working in a coordinated manner. There is panic among public but from govt's side we are taking all necessary steps to keep them safe and to provide them with basic necessities,'' said Priya Rajan.
