Chennai Doctor Stabbed 7 Times By Patient’s Relative, Critical. TN Doctors Declare Indefinite Strike

Chennai: A doctor, who was on duty in the city’s Kalaignar Centenary Super Speciality Hospital in Guindy, Tamil Nadu, was stabbed seven times by the relative of a patient. Identified as Balaji, the victim is presently being treated at the Intensive Care Unit. Visuals of the spot showed blood spilled on the floor depicting the severity of the injury the doctor sustained.

Police sources said the accused, Vignesh, was angry and alleged that the doctor did not treat his mother properly. Chennai police arrested one person in the case, confirmed Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramanian. He added that legal action will follow.

"The accused – Vignesh – entered the hospital with a kitchen knife hidden. His mother was suffering from cancer and was admitted at the hospital for treatment. The accused was the attendent to the patient. Believing that his mother wasn't treated properly, the accused entered the doctor's cabin with a hidden knife and stabbed him multiple times," the health minister said.

The Health Minister added the doctor was stabbed 7 times. The incident angered the doctors and Tamil Nadu government doctors have announced an infinite work ban and protest until justice is served.

Health Minister Ma Subramanian will be meeting with government doctor’s representatives at the Tamil Nadu secretariat at 4 pm to discuss the possible actions for dropping the protest.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin took to X and expressed anguish over the incident. He said the doctor was stabbed by a family member of the patient and the accused was immediately arrested. "The accused in this case has been arrested immediately. I have ordered a thorough investigation in this matter and for providing all necessary treatment to the injured doctor," the CM added.

"The selfless work of our government doctors is immeasurable in providing appropriate treatment to the patients who seek government hospitals regardless of time. It is our duty to ensure their safety during this work," Stalin said in the X post.

"The government will take all measures to prevent such incidents from happening in the future," he added.
