'chaddi baniyan' gang strikes in nashik: steals gold worth rs 5 lakh and bananas!

Mumbai: A bizarre string of thefts involving an ‘underwear’ gang has left residents of Malegaon, Nashik, on edge as the gang broke into a home and a college on Monday, stealing nearly 70 grams of gold worth around ₹5 lakh—and a stash of bananas. The gang, widely known as the ‘chaddi baniyan’ gang due to their signature attire of trunks and vests, was caught on a CCTV camera during the robbery.

In the footage, four robbers were seen, out of which, one was keeping watch while the others forcefully opened doors, reported NDTV.

"The footage clearly shows the gang members dressed in trunks and vests, making their way into the premises," said a police official involved in the investigation, according to NDTV.

"Their modus operandi is unique, and it’s unclear whether different groups are using this strategy to confuse law enforcement, or if it’s part of a coordinated effort."

This latest incident comes on the heels of a spate of thefts by another unusual criminal group in the area—the 'gown' gang. Dressed in women’s garments, primarily gowns, this gang has been targeting residential neighbourhoods in Malegaon. Last week, they were reported to have stolen money from a temple donation box in addition to burgling several homes.

A CCTV camera also captured the 'gown' gang in action, showing members clad in gowns and wielding sharp weapons. The recent activities of both the 'underwear' and 'gown' gangs have heightened tension among Malegaon residents, who are now demanding immediate police action.

"The 'gown' gang had already sparked fear in our community, and now with the 'underwear' gang striking as well, people are even more worried," said a local resident. "We need the authorities to act quickly before things get worse."
