Blackpink, Stray Kids and more K-pop stars losing millions due to AI?
According a recent UK study, Blackpink is the most streamed AI-cover artists, followed by Justin Bieber and Kanye West. Additionally, BTS’ Jimin, Blackpink’s Jennie, Stray Kids, TWICE, NCT Dream and ENHYPEN are also part of top 20 most streamed AI-cover artists. While fans have been loving Blackpink AI-generated cover of BABYMONSTER'sBatter Up andSHEESH, the streams have reportedly affected both the groups in a negative manner. While Blackpink faced an estimated revenue loss of £376,184.85 (approximately Rs 4 crore) from 1,463 analysed videos, BABYMONSTER missed out on an estimated £246,499.79 (over Rs 2 crore) due to AI-generated covers. Unfortunately, Stray Kids, Blackpink's Jennie, BTS' Jungkook and TWICE are also losing out on the big bucks due to AI. Additionally, FIFTY FIFTY's Cupid was one of the most-stream songs used in AI covers. As AI-generated music continues to rise, one can't help but be concerned about the future of the music industry.
Struggles to identify AI music
Interestingly, the same study found out that nearly half of UK adults surveyed (49%) could not distinguish between AI-generated and human-made music. While 72% of the participants claimed they could spot AI-generated music, a significant number were unable to correctly differentiate an AI-generated song from a real one.
