g7 leaders 'unequivocally' condemn iran missile attack on israel, joe biden rules out military strike

The United States and G7 members have "unequivocally" condemned Iran's missile attack on Israel, the White House announced on Wednesday. In response to the incident, which saw Iran launch over 180 missiles into Israel—its largest assault to date—the G7 is contemplating the imposition of new sanctions.

President Joe Biden engaged in discussions with G7 leaders regarding Iran's "unacceptable" actions and is coordinating a collective response. While emphasising that Iran is "way off course," Biden reiterated that he does not endorse a military strike on Iran's nuclear sites. He also confirmed that he plans to speak with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the near future.

Taking to X, Biden wrote, "This morning, I joined a call with G7 leaders to discuss Iran's unacceptable attack against Israel and to coordinate a response to this attack, including new sanctions. I reaffirmed the United States’ ironclad commitment to Israel's security."

When asked by a reporter, Biden said "Answer is no" and further added that he would not support an Israeli attack on Iran nuclear facilities.

The situation in the Middle East has escalated dramatically, with Iran's missile attack pushing the region closer to the brink of war. Following the assault, both Tel Aviv and Washington issued strong warnings of potential retaliation against Tehran.

In addition, the Israeli military has been involved in ongoing combat with Hezbollah, the Lebanese armed group backed by Iran. Wednesday marked a particularly deadly day for the Israeli military, with eight soldiers killed—making it the deadliest day for Israel’s forces on the Lebanon front in the past year amid continuing border clashes.

Kurt Campbell, the US Deputy Secretary of State, highlighted the need for a "return message" to Iran in light of its aggressive actions. Speaking at a virtual event hosted by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, Campbell described Iran's behaviour as "deeply irresponsible" and noted the importance of aligning the US response with that of Israel. He warned that the Middle East is currently on a “knife's edge,” where any escalation could threaten both Israeli and American interests.

"While we recognise the importance of a response, we are concerned about the potential for broader escalation," Campbell stated. "This could lead to sustained hostility that would jeopardise not only Israel but also our strategic interests."
