baroda, cooch behar, and tripura’s royal families and their fascinating filmy connection

It’s a well-known fact that historically, members of royal families married within royalty. These marriages were not just about personal unions; they served as diplomatic tools and were grounded in the belief that "royal blood" was sacred and divinely designated. Even though the monarchy in India was abolished in 1971, there are many popular and notable descendants of these erstwhile royal families today.

Actors Raima Senand Riya Sen have a fascinating royal lineage. They are connected to the royal families of Baroda, Cooch Behar, and Tripura. In a sense, they are modern-day princesses due to their impressive family heritage.

Here’s how they are connected:

The Gaekwad dynasty once ruled the Princely state of Baroda. Princess Indira Devi was the daughter of Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad II of Baroda and his second wife, Chimnabai II.

Indira Devi married Maharaja Jitendra Narayan Bhup Bahadur from the Cooch Behar royal family. Together, they had five children: Princess Ila Devi, Prince Jagaddipendra Narayan, Prince Indrajitendra Narayan, Princess Gayatri Devi, and Princess Menaka Devi.

Ila Devi married Maharaj Ramendra Kishore Deb Burman, a member of the Tripura royal family.

Their son, Bharat Dev Varma, married actress Moon Moon Sen, the daughter of the legendary film star Suchitra Sen. This makes their daughters, Raima and Riya closely tied to royalty — their great-grandmother, Indira Devi, came from the Baroda royal family and married into the Cooch Behar royal family. Their grandmother, Ila Devi, was born into the Cooch Behar royal family and married into the Tripura royal family. What makes this even more interesting is the fact that Ila Devi was the sister of Maharani Gayatri Devi of Jaipur, which further deepened their royal connection.
