Guwahati: In a sharp response to the ongoing debate over Waqf property reforms, Assam Deputy Speaker and BJP leader Dr. Numal Momin has strongly criticised AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal, accusing him of trying to mislead the public with his recent sensational claims about Waqf land. Ajmal’s remarks, which suggested that even prominent properties, including the Parliament building, are built on Waqf land, have drawn widespread condemnation.
Momin asserted that Ajmal’s agenda has been exposed, accusing him of attempting to promote a radical agenda aimed at converting India into an Islamic nation. He also provided historical context, explaining that the Waqf Board was formed in 1913 by the Muslim community, and the Waqf Act was passed in 1954. He argued that the properties initially granted by the government for community development have since been misused by a few powerful individuals within the Muslim community.
"It’s shameful for Badruddin Ajmal to question ownership of lands belonging to figures, and even the Parliament," Momin remarked. "His comments on the Parliament’s land are particularly disgraceful."
Momin further noted that the Waqf Board was not created solely for the benefit of the Muslim community, as it included Hindu properties as well. He raised concerns over the alleged renaming of properties in Assam with Muslim names, hinting that if similar claims were made regarding Ajmal's own property being part of the Waqf Board, it would spark serious controversy.
Momin also pointed out that a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) is already investigating all relevant issues related to Waqf properties, and urged Ajmal to present any evidence to the committee rather than making unsubstantiated claims in public. He criticized Ajmal for not raising these concerns during his tenure as an MP, suggesting that his current statements are politically motivated and intended to create confusion among the public.
"This is nothing but a political game," Momin concluded, adding that Ajmal’s remarks are an attempt to stay politically relevant amid declining support from his constituents. Momin strongly condemned Ajmal's statements, calling for an end to such divisive tactics.
