In the wake of the horrific Kolkata doctor rape case, Karnataka on Tuesday announced a series of comprehensive measures aimed at enhancing the safety of women doctors. Following a recent meeting with members of the medical fraternity and other stakeholders, the state announced new protocols including the installation of CCTV cameras in strategic locations and improved lighting throughout all hospital blocks and corridors to ensure better visibility and security.
Additional safety features include the placement of alarm bells and mobile gadgets at appropriate locations, as well as the installation of a pink box for receiving complaints. Doctors are advised to carry pepper spray at all times. The measures also emphasise compliance with National Medical Commission (NMC) regulations concerning the safety of healthcare personnel.
The 112 emergency helpline will be coordinated with local police stations, and self-defence training will be provided to students. A mentorship program for postgraduates and regular training for security personnel and home guards are also part of the new protocols. Regular security rounds and periodic review meetings will be held to address ongoing safety concerns.
A mock drill for security personnel will be conducted in coordination with the police department, and armed security will be posted near casualty areas. Additional measures include creating duty rooms in key hospital areas, ensuring washrooms are available on each floor, and providing a round-the-clock canteen facility.
To regulate hospital access, restrictions will be placed on the number of attenders per patient, and a strict one-pass policy will be enforced. QR code scanning by security will be initiated, and ID cards with alarm features will be issued to postgraduates. Security will also be stationed at triage points and biometric systems will be installed in duty rooms.
An alcohol check by security personnel will be conducted, with those found intoxicated barred from entering the premises. A fine of INR 50,000 will be levied for any security lapses. Separate duty rooms for male and female postgraduates will be established, and an employee safety committee will be constituted to oversee the implementation of these measures.
