The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) has voiced its opposition to the proposed National Register of Citizens (NRC) at the national level, asserting that it is impractical given the incomplete NRC process in Assam. AIUDF MLA and party General Secretary Rafiqul Islam emphasized that despite the investment of over Rs 1,600 crore in Assam’s NRC updation process, the final list is yet to be published.
Rafiqul Islam questioned the possibility of implementing a national NRC when the process in Assam remains unfinished. He argued, "The Assam Chief Minister, Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, is advocating for a national NRC, but how is it possible? We want those illegal foreigners (both Muslims and Hindus) who entered Assam after 1971 to be identified and deported, but the updated NRC in Assam is still not finalized."
The AIUDF leader also criticized the Chief Minister and the BJP for what he called "communal politics," accusing them of inconsistencies. "On one hand, they are pushing for the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), which grants citizenship to those who came from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan. On the other hand, they are talking about a national NRC," he said.
Regarding the proposed "One Nation, One Election" policy, Islam expressed his skepticism, calling the idea impractical for a country as large as India. He suggested that the policy is merely a distraction for the public, adding, "Even if implemented now, it will eventually fail. The BJP seems to lack sufficient understanding of the complexities of governing such a vast nation."
Islam reiterated his party’s stance of identifying and deporting all those who came from Bangladesh after 1971, regardless of their religion.
