At least three people were killed and five others injured in a mass shooting near Gage Park in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood on Monday. The incident occurred at the intersection of West 59th Street and South Saint Louis Avenue. Authorities have yet to identify a suspect or determine a motive.
Chicago Police Department officers arrived at the scene to find eight victims—four men and four women—ranging in age from 20 to 35.
Three of the men were pronounced dead at the scene, while the remaining five victims were rushed to local hospitals. Their current conditions remain unknown.
Chicago Police Chief of Patrol Jon Hein said the shooting likely disrupted a social gathering.
"We have eight victims," Hein said. "We're going to solve this crime and find the individuals that are responsible for the heinous, terrible incident."
A nearby resident described the house as a frequent site of parties and social activities. Speaking to CBS News, the individual said, "I got home from work, and I seen a lot of people at the house—it was like over 20 people—and shortly after, I started hearing shots—very loud shots—maybe, I don't know, I can't recall how many. It seems like it was a party. There's always people at that house partying."
The circumstances surrounding the shooting are still unclear. It has not been confirmed whether the suspect was among the victims or if multiple individuals were involved in the attack.
Street Pastor Donovan Price lamented the violence, saying, "Just sad. It almost makes you hopeless, but you have to keep hope in times like these. You have to keep yourself together. You have to really want to reach out and kiss your loved ones, and love your loved ones, because when this many people are shot in a situation like this, it's extra hard during the holidays."
