Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey was reportedly Donald Trump’s initial pick for FBI Director during the President-elect’s transition planning. However, according to people familiar with the process, Bailey's chances were ruined by a lackluster interview in Mar-a-Lago. In the end, Kash Patel took center stage as Bailey was unable to satisfy the requirements.
Bailey apparently found it difficult to make an impression on Trump during their encounter, despite being characterized as having a decent look for the post. Although Bailey "looked the part," an individual with knowledge of the transition team told Axios that he "didn't have the presence in the room" that Trump looks for in high-level appointees.
The Independent cited the same source as saying that Trump gives personal chemistry a lot of weight when choosing officials.
Kash Patel: From Deputy Contender to Top Choice
Patel was initially a candidate for the deputy director role, but Trump ultimately selected him for the top FBI position. Patel, a longstanding Trump supporter, has continuously sided with the former president on matters ranging from criticism of the so-called "deep state" to skepticism about government monitoring.
Patel's promotion was influenced by his allegiance to Trump and his prominence in his inner circle. He testified in investigations into sensitive papers and the Capitol riot on January 6 and played significant roles in legal and political disputes surrounding the previous president.
According to sources inside the transition team, Patel was chosen on purpose. Referring to ongoing legal measures against Trump spearheaded by special counsel Jack Smith, who just discontinued his charges, one source described it as a "personal message to the left."
A Break from Precedent
Patel's selection signifies a departure from contemporary conventions. Historically, FBI directors have been unaffected by the president. The choice of a loyalist by Trump marks a significant break from that custom.
Patel's open criticism of the FBI's investigating practices, especially with regard to Russian meddling in the 2016 election, demonstrates how closely he aligns with Trump's beliefs. His reputation as a reliable ally was further solidified by his support of Trump in well-publicized court cases.
