mohammed shami suffers injury scare in syed mushtaq ali trophy match vs madhya pradesh

India pacer Mohammed Shami, awaiting a return to India's Test fold after staying out of the national team for over a year, suffered an injury scare during Bengal's match against Madhya Pradesh in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy on Friday. Shami last played for the Indian team in the ODI World Cup final in 2023 and has been out with an injury since then, followed by surgery and rehab.

Opting to bat first, Bengal posted 189/9 in its 20 overs, with young opener Karan Lal scoring a 30-ball 44. Madhya Pradesh chased down the target with two balls remaining, riding on half-centuries from Subhranshu Senapati and skipper Rajat Patidar.

But despite these batting heroics, Shami drew all the attention with his injury scare, especially when he is looking to get back into the international reckoning.

While bowling the 19th over of Madhya Pradesh's innings, Shami fell while looking to stop the ball and got hit on his shoes.

Shami looked uncomfortable after the fall and lay on the ground while holding his lower back. The match was being played at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium C in Rajkot.

Nitin Patel, head of the Centre of Excellence's medical panel who is travelling with Shami to track his progress, rushed into the field to check on him. Fortunately, it didn't result in any serious injury. According to a report in ESPNCricinfo, Shami is ‘fine’.

It wasn't a great outing for the star pacer against Madhya Pradesh as he conceded 38 runs from four overs without picking any wickets. Shami has bagged four wickets in as many matches at an economy of 9.74.

Ahead of SMAT, the star pacer bagged a match haul of seven wickets in a Ranji Trophy game against the same opponent, in what was his first competitive game after his return from injury.
