The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for northern Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and parts of south Andhra Pradesh, predicting that the storm will make landfall near Puducherry this afternoon. With a potential wind speed of 70-80 kmph, gusting up to 90 kmph, the authorities have stepped up precautionary measures across the region. Amid this, several restrictions on transport and educational institutes have been made in Chennai.

As of 2:30 am on Saturday, Chennai and nearby districts, including Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, and Tiruvallur, have experienced light to moderate rainfall, with some areas receiving heavy showers. The cyclone was located approximately 190 km southeast of Chennai, moving northwest at a speed of 7 kmph. It is expected to make landfall between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram, close to Puducherry, on Saturday afternoon.

As of 2:30 am on 30th November, Cyclone Fengal was centred over the Southwest Bay of Bengal, about 180 km east of Puducherry and 190 km southeast of Chennai. The storm is moving northwestwards at 7 kmph and is expected to cross between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram close to Puducherry by this afternoon. Heavy rain and strong winds are anticipated, prompting authorities to prepare for potential disruptions.

Schools and Colleges Closed

In view of the cyclone, schools and colleges have been declared closed today in Chennai, Thiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Kallakuruchi, and Ranipet districts. Parents and students are urged to stay indoors and prioritise safety.

Parks, Beaches, and Traffic Restrictions

All parks and beaches in Chennai have been shut to the public for the day. Additionally, traffic on East Coast Road (ECR) and Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) will be temporarily halted this afternoon when the cyclone is expected to make landfall. Commuters are advised to plan their journeys accordingly.

Metro Trains and Bus Services Operational

While several public spaces are closed, metro trains and government buses in Chennai will run as scheduled today. Authorities, however, have advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel and remain indoors unless absolutely necessary.

The Greater Chennai Corporation has deployed 22,000 workers to handle relief measures in case of heavy rain or flooding. The city has readied 329 relief centres, 103 boats, and 1,686 motor pumps to tackle potential emergencies. Residents are urged to stay alert and contact authorities in case of urgent needs.
