Hubble’s Image Of A Ghostly Star-Forming Pillar
Emerging like a spectral creature from a fiery red expanse, this structure is a towering pillar of gas and dust. Known as the Cone Nebula (NGC 2264), it gets its name from its conical shape seen in ground-based observations. This massive formation lies within a chaotic star-forming region.
Mystic Mountain
This surreal, jagged peak wrapped in delicate clouds resembles a fantastical realm from a Tolkien novel. Hidden within the pillar are young stars, whose jets of gas pierce through the clouds, creating streams that extend from its towering summits.
A Reflection Nebula in Orion
Shortly after astronauts repaired the Hubble Space Telescope in December 1999, the Hubble Heritage Project captured this vibrant image of NGC 1999, a nebula located in the Orion constellation. Using the Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2), astronomers collaborated with teams from Texas and Ireland to produce this striking colour image.
The Ghost Nebula
IC 63, also referred to as the Ghost Nebula, is situated about 550 light-years from Earth. It acts both as a reflection nebula, scattering the light from a nearby star, and as an emission nebula, radiating hydrogen-alpha emissions caused by the same star.
The Bubble Nebula
Located 8,000 light-years away, the Bubble Nebula (NGC 7635) is an emission nebula. Captured to commemorate Hubble’s 26th anniversary in space, this image showcases its intricate and ethereal beauty.
The Lagoon Nebula
In honour of its 28th year in orbit, Hubble captured a stunning and vibrant image of the Lagoon Nebula. Spanning 55 light-years in width and 20 light-years in height, this nebula lies about 4,000 light-years away. The image focuses on a turbulent star-forming area within the nebula, covering roughly four light-years across.
