india break pakistan's six-year old world record, become first team in world to have win percentage higher than 90 in t20is in a calendar year

The Indian cricket team won their last T20I of 2024 by a huge margin of 135 runs on Friday (November 15) against South Africa at the New Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg to seal a 3-1 series victory against the Proteas to end a remarkable year in the shortest format of the game.

While the Men in Blue's triumph in the 2024 T20 World Cup under Rohit Sharma's captaincy will live long in the memory, the team were nearly flawless in the format across the year even after Suryakumar Yadav was appointed full-time captain in July.

India played a total of 26 T20Is in 2024 and won 24 of them with only two defeats. They ended the year with a stunning win percentage of 92.31. They lost one match in the five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe, and the second defeat came in the second T20I against South Africa.

India Breaks Pakistan's Massive World Record

The remarkable year saw India create a massive world record and become the first team in the world to finish a year with a win percentage of more than 90 in T20Is after playing more than 15 matches. The world champions broke a record set by Pakistan in 2018.

Quite incredibly, India's stunning year is just second in all forms of T20 cricket across the world, with only Tamil Nadu (93.75%) bettering them. Karnataka (91.67% in 2019) are the only other team in the globe to finish a year with a win percentage above 90.

India started the year with a 3-0 victory over Afghanistan at home before winning all seven games they played at the T20 World Cup. A second-string team led by Shubman Gill beat Zimbabwe 4-1 in a five-match series before back-to-back 3-0 victories away to Sri Lanka and home to Bangladesh before ending the year with a 3-1 victory over South Africa.

Two wins (Afghanistan and Sri Lanka) came in a Super Over. India also registered two of the five highest T20I scores in history with a total of 297-6 against Bangladesh at Hyderabad and 283-1 against South Africa in Johannesburg. These are also the two highest scores in T20I between two full member nations.
