Mumbai: Every now and then, an incident involving the Mumbai metro or local trains surfaces on social media platforms, and this time is no different. A user on X posted a thread stating that he was not allowed to bring his bicycle on board at Bandra metro station. The user, Mayank Gaggar, raised the question on X: “What do I do?” which sparked numerous responses. The main question that arises is whether bicycles or similar vehicles are allowed on the Mumbai metro.
The user also shared a list of permitted and prohibited items at the metro station with the caption, “Even the don'ts mentioned at the station don’t prohibit cycles. I don't understand the issue here. How is this promoting convenience for Mumbaikars?”
Netizens React
Many users shared their comments on this, with several agreeing with the user. However, others argued that bringing a vehicle like a bicycle onto the metro is impractical, as it can cause inconvenience during security checks and for other passengers.
“Please read pt.8- Do not carry any article which does not pass through baggage scanning machine & pt.9- Do not carry heavy luggage. Both would showcase that a cycle cannot be taken in metro”
Another said, “Imagine 10 people like you standing on the platform trying to board the same compartment where another 15 like you are already inside with cycles. Then of course, someone will want to come with one of those BEST electric bikes. Next time take a Horse, they might allow that !”

Is It Really Allowed?
Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation: Do's & Don'ts
Don'ts:
- No Eating or Drinking: Do not eat or drink inside the Metro trains.
- Avoid Rushing: Do not rush on the platform while entering the train.
- No Littering, Spitting, or Smoking: Do not litter, spit, or smoke within the metro premises or inside the train.
- No Forceful Door Handling: Do not try to open the train doors forcefully or lean over the platform edge.
- No Standing on Train Roof: Do not attempt to stand on the roof of the train as the overhead wires are energized with 25,000 volts.
- No Track Access: Do not enter or walk on the tracks.
- Respect Fellow Passengers and Staff: Do not abuse or misbehave with metro staff or fellow passengers.
- No Unscanned Items: Do not carry any items that do not pass through the baggage scanning machine.
- Prohibited Items: Do not carry inflammable objects, weapons, pets, raw meat or fish, or heavy luggage into the metro premises.
The debate shows a gap in clarity regarding metro rules, with some passengers seeking greater convenience and others prioritising safety and comfort. A clearer policy on such matters could help avoid confusion and improve the commuting experience for Mumbaikars.
